ITP Studio Series: Art in Action: Ways of Working

Description:
We will discuss the beauty of constraints in artistic risk taking. How can we pose challenges for children to explore different ways of exploring materials? What rituals of thought and practice can you implement in your classroom?

Presenter:
Jamie Kelty, Teaching Artist – Jamie has been with Cow Hollow School since 2012 and has enjoyed the privilege of sharing art experiences with children since 1992. She works also as an assemblage/collage painter with a variety of mediums which translates well into exploring a multitude of materials with children. She received her B.F.A. in painting and her K-12 art teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. Jamie taught art in schools in Kansas, Missouri, and New York City. She worked at the The Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York teaching in public programs and in schools, creating programming, and managing the Fine Arts Studio teaching artists. Jamie regularly presents studio workshops for parents and educators through The COLLABORATORY at Cow Hollow School and The Innovative Teacher Project in San Francisco.

ITP Studio Series: Black and White

Before launching into the full spectrum of color, stand at its edge with white and black, the beginning and the end of color. Black and white provide a frame through which we more clearly see and understand color. Side by side on paper, the contrast between black and white call each more fully to life.
— Ann Pelo, author of The Language of Art

Description:

Black and white can be stark or subtle, and always sophisticated. Spend the morning exploring these harmonious opposites, and many shades of gray, using a wide variety media and materials.

About the Presenter:

Inspired by the Reggio Approach, Susan Thayer joined GeoKids 11 years ago as a classroom teacher, and has worked with children aged 3 months through 6 years. She feels lucky to have found a profession that combines her interests in the arts, creative process, and advocacy for young children.
